Ministry of Social Development – VBA Templates

MSD Templates

In 2011, Allfields were approached to completely overhaul the template set for the Ministry of Social Development which had been in place for several years.

I have dealt with all Allfields at all levels, initially with Shiree when we initially engaged with Allfields and Patrick, Matt and Jeremiah in delivering the technical solution.  We were looking to consolidate the number of corporate templates we used (89 templates in total) and implement a solution that would allow us to better manage our templates.  In our initial engagements Shiree has presented and explained what the proposed business solution would entail to both our technical and business teams in a clear and concise manner.

I have to give kudos to Patrick for his deep technical understanding and his “outside the square” thinking.  I have found Patrick to be the “go to” person to be able to talk through and analyse a given requirement.  This has enabled me to better articulate how the solution will work for the business and how it will be implemented and supported from a technical perspective.

In summary, I have found the team at Allfields to be very professional,  extremely responsive (particularly within very challenging situations) and delivering within compressed timeframes.  Allfields have brought a fresh and novel approach to how a solution is delivered and implemented and I have been very impressed with the new look and feel of the template form design and functionality.  The solution has allowed us to drastically reduced the number of corporate templates we work with across the organisation (we now have 20 templates rather than 89) this has meant we’ve been better able to manage the templates from both a corporate and technical perspective.

It’s been a pleasure working with the Allfields team and I look forward to working with Allfields in 2012.

Our approach

MSD presented Allfields with a problem, and it was up to allfields to come up with a solution.

The problem was many replicted templates with hard coded differences due to the workunit of MSD the template was required for.  Allfields approach was to – in a two stage rollout process, allow for the work unit to be entered and stored as part of the users profile, thus using this data to dynamically populate the correct template.

MSD also took the opportunity of new templates coinciding with the 2011 Election and new ministers to refresh the template branding, allowing for consistent template style across all of MSD.

The result

The result was fantastic.  MSD IT now only need to manage a small core set of templates.  New work units, new ministers, infact all drop down variables are managed via a web based editor, reducing all that nasty hard coding we see in templates.
